Senufo "Kpeliè Mask"

New

28 cm (11"), Ivory Coast

Kpeliè masks are the most famous mask type of the Senufo culture. They are made in wood and, less commonly, in brass casting. The cultic life of this people is dominated by the Poro cult, within which this type of mask is also used. The mask presented here was cast by an artist in his field. The brass casting is incredibly delicate and thin and is distinguished by excellent quality. Between the horns, there is a female figure sitting on a chair, wearing a hairstyle typical for the tribe and holding a bowl in an offering posture. A fine ornamentation covers the eyes and parts of the mask's face. A lip plug and a curly beard at the chin are additional decorative elements. A beautiful age patina refines this metal mask.
