Marka - Bamana, Face Mask

New

32 cm (1' 1"), Mali

The masks of the Marka, strongly influenced stylistically by the neighboring Bamana, are crafted as elongated, narrow specimens adorned with punched brass sheet. The mask depicted here is an excellent example of this type. On the forehead, there are metal strips intended to symbolize horns. Two round, elongated metal parts are attached to the sides of the cheeks, and there is also one on the nose; these represent hanging hair strands. The eyebrows are highlighted with indigo blue. The mask is also bordered with a piece of fabric, which shows remnants of the assembly for the dancer.
