38,5 cm (1' 3"), Zaire-Sudan
The settlement area of the Mangbetu extends from northeastern Zaire to the border with Sudan and into the Central African Republic. Their artistic activity is reflected in all their works, whether in items of daily use, in ritual objects, knives, musical instruments, or in containers, such as the one presented here, which is crafted in human form. The lid is adorned with a head with the characteristic elongated skull typical of the Mangbetu. The body of the container is surrounded by decorative nails, an ornamental element that highlights the craftsmanship. Long legs and large feet for stability characterize the container. A reddish-brown color and a beautiful patina distinguish this interesting object.
