Songye, "Kifwebe" Mask

New

43 cm (1' 5"), Congo

In the art market, many Kifwebe masks are available, but only a fraction of them were actually used in rituals. Due to their almost graphic striking appearance, they are mass-produced for the market and serve as decoration in modern homes. However, the mask offered here is authentic and was danced in rituals; the inside of the mask shows clear signs of long-term use. Kif or Bifwebe masks are ritual objects of the secret society "Bwadi bwa Kifwebe". The initiates of this society, the "Basha Masende", are knowledgeable in dealing with their deities. These types of masks are worn during initiation, circumcision, or funeral ceremonies. It is an impressive original from ancient Africa.
