Baule - Mother-Child Representation

New

31,5 cm (1'), Ivory Coast

The Baule constitute the second largest ethnic group in the Ivory Coast after the Senufo. They are known for their excellent artistic carving skills. The depicted mother-child figure is a beautiful example of their ability: the finest carving art combined with an outstanding age patina, pleasing the connoisseur of African ethnic art. The mother figure sits on a traditional chair and carefully holds her child in both bent arms. Her hairstyle, typical for the Baule style, is designed with fine lines representing hair. Decorative scars adorn the temples, neck, chest, and back.
