Erzurum flatweaves have long been admired for their restraint elegance and clear colouration. The green field under the arch is associated with the paradise in Islam, here complemented by red which fills the spandrels. The connected flower rosettes above the arch are known from Reyhanli kilim in south-east Anatolia near Aleppo. The yellow border counterweights the composition and is usually framed by a dark brown or black outer border. The design of the inner border can be found in weavings from neighbouring Bayburt. Within this general concept is a wide variation of motifs and of quality. Many of the better ones have some areas woven in metal thread and or silk. Dates appear frequently and most often in examples from the middle of the 19th century. In our example we find the date under an unusual pattern reminiscent of a Mamluk candlestick. A parallel to this distinct motif can be found in Yanni Petsopoulos, 'Kilims', plate 268. The date states 1292 AH, which correlates to 1876 AD. In the Topkapi Serail an elegant kilim is kept which shows a similar drawing in the top of the arch. It is published in 'Textile Furnishings of the Topkapi Palace Museum', plate four, surprisingly attributed to Konya. Some Erzurum kilim have two designs on the bottom of the field implying, or even depicting, where to place one's feet. In our example these are two hooked medallions. Following this idea, the red hexagons might represent knees and the three flower rosettes hands and forehead. We will probably never know if that was the case, but the idea reminds us of the original function of this beautiful artefact.

Turkmen carpets with designs influenced by flatweaves are known but are mostly attributed to the Eagle göl groups. This piece, with its extensive use of camel hair in the pile, is therefore the exception since it is clearly woven in the Middle Amu Darya region. The colour scheme and the mihrab-style panels look to be influenced by Ersari and Uzbek, but the appearance of the soumak decoration in these relates it to the Yomut/Göklan flatweaves. The banded decoration equally relates to the design of certain pile and flatwoven Ersari and Kizil Ayak chuvals, indicating that this is an unprecedented weaving from melting pot of tribes and styles that can be found in the Middle Amu Darya.

The flatweaves of the Turkmen tribes have received very little attention and are assigned to Tekke and Yomut tribes. This has perhaps more to do with assumptions about dating most to the late 19th century, and those tribes being the most prolific weavers during that period. Examples in the carpet collections in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, have always been described as funerary rugs to cover the deceased, but they could also function as hangings in tents to separate the sexes. The use of cotton, camel wool, the flower or tree decoration executed in soumak, and the blue green, help us to identify this as a product of the wider Yomut family.
