The cloudbands in the medallions are paired and possess a zoomorphic quality that in the past has prompted some observers to associate them with the dragon carpets att ributed to the Karabagh region.
While many carpets featuring these cloudband forms are referred to as Cloudband Kazaks, this rug has numerous
characteristi cs that link it to the Karabagh region and, therefore, the actual village of Chondzoresk.
The white-ground rosett e and tendril border, the 'barber pole' and blue and black minor borders, the brindle-coloured wool foundation, the specific braiding on the upper end, as well as the yellow hooked forms at the top and bott om ends of the field are all elements associated with rugs most accurately ascribed to Chondzoresk.
In fact, the central swastika compartment in the medallions also has eight extensions that relate to the silk embroideries
produced in the region from the 16th-18th centuries.

Of the three well-documented types of Sevan Kazak, the group with a square border design and squared octagonal ends, as seen here, tends to be larger and have a more woolly texture. These rugs are most commonly associated with the villages located high above Lake Sevan.
This distinct group features medallions with multiple hooked layers and fields that transition into a white central motif, which Caucasian rug researcher Lati f Kerimov referred to as the 'wedding table', clearly associati ng these carpets with marriage ceremonies. In this particular example, there are two figures depicted in the medallions, which, in light of the previous suggestion, may represent the bride and groom.
