Buffalo masks are traditionally significant to the Jukun and represent the connection to the spirits of the forest. This old mask, with two horns and tubular eyes, is polychrome painted with earth colors. The interior shows beautiful wear patterns and an old label collected by my father. Some old abrasions and partial loss to the lower edge.

    Nigeria, early 20th century

Figures of the Jukun are rare and represent ancestral beings that were kept in special shrine-like structures. The purpose of these figures, which have different interpretations, was to protect the village community from harm and evil spirits. The head is crowned with a knobby hairstyle, and the ears are depicted with the typical cylindrical ivory jewelry inserted through pierced earlobes. The surface shows the age of this object, yet there are remnants of patinated areas. There are some age-related damages and a missing part on the left front foot. A collection label from my father is still present on the right foot.

    Nigeria, mid 20th century

An abstract representation of a guardian figure of the Mambila people, who live in the eastern part of Nigeria. The hair of the figure, created by inserted wooden pegs, is unique and interesting. The eyes resemble cowrie shells, and the open mouth suggests the figure is ready for dialogue and to receive requests. A knobbed loincloth covers the genitals, while the sturdy legs symbolize a strong connection to the earth. The figure retains traces of polychrome paint. There are small age-related losses to the figure.

    Cameroon, mid 20th century

"Batcham" is actually the name of a chefferie in the middle of the Cameroonian grasslands, but the first masks were found here and were adopted with this name. These are not dance masks in the usual sense, they are part of the enthronement or funeral ceremony of a ruler. It is the representation of a hippopotamus head, which is also the "pi", the double of the monarch. An exceptional, rare mask with diamond-shaped decoration on the elongated head section. The neck part is finished with a carved representation of a cowrie shell band. The nose is damaged on the left side due to insect damage, as are parts of the mask itself.

    Southern Cameroon, 19th - early 20th century

This type of Fang statue displays the typical style of the area around Bipindl, Lolodorf, where the German botanist Zenker, founder of the city of Yaoundé, once lived on a coffee plantation. The dark brown color was created by the smoke from the fire in the mask house and the anointing with palm oil. The carved stick at the buttocks was used to fix the figure onto the bark container with the relics of the ancestors. A protective amulet "Gri-gri" is located around the neck on a twisted fiber cord. The right hand from the elbow is missing.

    Southern Cameroon, ca. 1900 - 1930

The base of this relic figure is labeled with the suspected inscription 'Pangwe' or 'Pangwa-South Cameroon'. This statue is richly decorated with brass fittings on the body. Holding a medicine horn in its hands adorned with brass bands suggests that this figure was also used for the healing of the psyche and the body. Both legs, as is customary among the Fang, are also adorned with brass rings. The head bears a bundle of feathers from sacrificial animals. A deliberately induced umbilical hernia shown by the figure is common in this region and has a sexual connotation. A carved stick attached to the buttocks was used to fix the figure to the bark container with the relics of the ancestors.

    Gabon, early mid 20th century

This large representative reliquary guardian was meant to protect the ancestral relics placed in baskets. It is a meticulously crafted sculpture made from wood, brass, and copper. The back is made with a curved lozenge shape with a stylized head in the center. The dark color of the wood is enhanced by a beautiful glossy patina of age. This artistic simplification of a body had a great influence on the modern art world.

    H: 55 cm (1' 10")
    Gabon, early 20th century

This even and smooth figure stands out for its elaborate relief-like application of hammered brass wires running across its surface. The eyes are made of driven brass disks, from which linear wires symbolizing tears flow. Similarly arranged wires wind tightly around the neck. The foot and back are made up of two multicolored metal pieces with hammered diamond patterns. A ridged middle section indicates the rank of the person being guarded. The figure was centered in a woven basket to guard the ancestor's relic. There is minor insect damage on the bottom of the foot. Few of these figures remain as many of these significant masterpieces of African art were destroyed by missionaries during the Christianization process.

Gabon, 19th - early 20th century or earlier

An elongated oval mask made of very fragile wood with a central ridge, indicating its association with a gorilla. The skeletal skull of this primate is depicted in the design. The face is traditionally painted with kaolin white, which is associated with ancestors and the afterlife. They were danced at night in the light of a fire by members of the Ngil secret society, who aimed to create fear and terror. They were responsible for enforcing punishment for crimes within the village. Another feature of the mask is the use of real animal teeth in the mouth opening. This particular mask has damage to the back of the head, but despite this damage, it was still used in performances, demonstrating its importance to the secret society. The breaks have been repaired with two brass plates. Other age-related damage is mainly present at the edge of the mask, mouth, and ears.

    Congo, mid 20th century

Shield-shaped board masks of the Pende are rare but interesting. They were worn horizontally on the head, as the typical wear marks on the inside show. The head represents a hybrid creature with tube-shaped eyes, a nose protruding from the forehead, and a sharply angled open mouth. Two different horns emerge above the forehead. Remnants of a reddish color cover parts of the mask. These types of masks are usually closely associated with forest spirits and relate to the request for success in hunting.

    Congo, mid 20th century

A peculiarity of the Congo Basin are the so-called nail fetishes. In their function, they often correspond to the protective or holy figures of Christian and other religions. The magical figures usually do not show special care and technique in their artistic design. Often, the head of a figure is well and subtly crafted, while the body is roughly or without style control carved. The facial features of the "fetishes" usually reflect their area of responsibility, the monganga doctor figures have calm and balanced faces, while the konde figures sometimes have repulsive faces. This power figure has brass inserts with protruding pustules on the forehead, nose, chin, and back, making it easy to recognize that the purpose of this statue was to heal the prevailing smallpox epidemic at that time.

    Congo, early mid 20th century

A male power figure adorned with many magical elements from the southeastern part of Congo. Such figures were handed over to a village healer after completion by the carver, who adorned and filled them with magical substances, transforming them into animated, energy-filled beings. The artist placed ornamental inlays made of colored metal in the face, which lend a special charm to the eyebrows and chin. An untouched object that was in family possession for over 50 years.

The style of the Shankadi can be recognized by the cross-ridged hairstyle. This is a female hardwood ancestor figure with a modern, cubistic, and sophisticated design. It is adorned with blue beaded earrings, a necklace, and an arm ring, completing this beautiful aesthetic sculpture. Compared to the Luba-Hemba, little is known about the Luba-Shankadi, as the enthusiasm for these works of art at the time led to a lack of precise field research.
