The coupled columns in this ivory ground prayer rug, probably made in the Ghiordes region of Manisa province in West Anatolia, have become disconnected from the architecture depicted in the field; they do not touch the arch or the ground below. These prayer rugs depict a provincial rendering of the prayer arch design seen in the famous Ottoman rugs made in Cairo in the 16th century. The flowers within the prayer arch take the place of the hanging lamp seen in the 16th century examples and the carnations in the field are the flowers of paradise promised to the faithful in the Qur’an. The flowers depicted in the field and border are typical of the genre and associated with the Ottoman court style. The panels above and below the field are particular to rugs of this type and can be understood as the authentic signature style of Ghiordes weavers. The colour and texture of the white ground are particularly noteworthy. These rugs have acquired the moniker ‘Transylvanian’ since so many examples have remained in the collections of the Protestant churches of that region. Inventories allow us to create a clear chronology for these rugs, which in turn helps to securely date this rug to the 18th century.

The thick pile sleeping rugs called Yataks have been attributed to Konya as a matter of course, however, the weave and colours of this superlative example seem more related to the rugs made in the Menderes valley region of south-western Anatolia. While the Memling guls may be reminiscent of Konya and in particular its yellow ground rugs, the closest relations of this rug are the Dazkiri rugs which share the same deep green, red, yellow and orange as well as the lustrous pile. There is variety in the size and shape of the Memling guls, and the contrast of the white ground highlights the chromatic clarity of the whole field. The depth of the pile is obvious and is a reminder that the weaving legacy of much of Anatolia is attached to requirements of form and function associated with the semi-nomadic lifestyle of many villages in the region until the 20th century. While the pattern may be associated with the 15th century German painter, the artistic expression here is associated with village women of the 19th century.
