The large medallion carpets made in the workshops in and around Ushak in west Anatolia were one of the great export successes of the Ottoman empire. These carpets were prized by the noble houses of Europe and can be seen in the richly decorated interiors of wealthy merchants and nobility in paintings from the 16th century onwards. While there are many large carpets in museum collections, smaller size carpets, such as this example, are rare survivals since they used to decorate tables and desks, as can be seen in Old Master paintings. It is notable that this carpet maintains the character and design format of the larger carpets of this type. The medallion with its serrated trefoils surround in brilliant green dominates the width of the field and even touches the borders, and the authority of the original design concept, an infinite repeat pattern, is maintained through the four quartered medallions in the corners. The clarity and variety of the colours, the height of the medallion, and the full and crisp character of the border and blue vine tracery in the field mark this carpet out as an exceptionally rare and fine example of a little seen genre of 17th century classical Turkish carpets.

Carpets with this design are named after Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), due to the type being found in some of his paintings. However, earlier depictions exist, like a Venetian manuscript illumination from the 1440s (HALI 177, p.69) and a fresco by Piero della Francesca from 1451 in Rimini. Small-pattern Holbein carpets have either a distinct ground colour on which the two motifs stand out almost like a main and secondary gul in Turkmen weaving or, as in this case, hide the pattern in different ground colours. Thus, the viewer can either see a blue or red square with a medallion in the centre, look at them as diagonal rows or refocus, overlook the colour challenge, and rediscover the original pattern elements. The size of our fragment suggests that it was part of an even rarer large-scale Small-pattern Holbein rug, like the one depicted in a 1604 painting in the National Portrait Gallery, London showing diplomats seated at a carpet covered table. Most likely this was one of the rugs belonging to Henry VIII.

There are almost identical smaller fragments in the Victoria and Albert Museum (HALI 6/4, p.362). This unpublished fragment is a rare and significant addition to the small known corpus of this design, the majority of which are in institutional collections.
