The artists carved this shield and handle from a single piece of wood. The handle consists of either a short, vertical ridge or a long ridge, which is broader and thicker in the middle and has a hollow or three finger holes. War shields are considered one of the most impressive creations by Asmat artists.
A rare and early example showing deeply carved lines with a very sophisticated pattern. Wood and color pigments!
